Playground Playtime - Fun with Friends

As the seasons warm up and the days grow longer, one of the most fun times that can be had is on the playground, making new friends or spending time with old ones. Whether it is a home-school co-op get together, a birthday party, a celebration of friendship, or just a slow afternoon, getting together at the local playground park is a great time!

Benefits of Playground Play

Making time to enjoy the world through monkey bars, slides, and swings encourages activity, creative thinking, and socialization. A great way to have that time is to throw little get-togethers or parties using the playground as the focal point. There are usually picnic benches and even grills sometimes. A great way to do it is to have themed get-togethers, little parties where the food can be a certain cuisine, the kids can wear costumes, and the games can be silly.

Here are 3 themed party ideas to have at the playground during the summer season:

  1. Pirate’s Cove: For a ton of fun, use the playground as a giant pirate ship. Have a pirate’s themed lunch of golden treasure (popcorn), hot dog ships, and watermelon. Set up a treasure hunt or play avoid-the-octopus tag. Dance to some sea shanties and have the kids slide down the plank. Another activity is pin the patch on the pirate and cannonball toss – which may look a lot like cornhole. Let the kids see a space they may be familiar with in a whole new light.
  2. Scientific Discovery: Some people like to keep the kids learning through fun activities even when school is out. The playground is a wonderful place to learn more about the world around them. They can look for local insects and flowers and record them in a scientific journal. They could do a craft where they make their own chalk with plaster of paris and tempera paint and then decorate the sidewalk if allowed. They can go on a wildlife hike and then have some brown bag lunches. Then they can do stretches and jumps like the animals that live in the surrounding parks to wrap up the day.
  3. Superhero: Instead of a jungle gym, the playground can transform into a supervillain lair. The hero squad can line up to play red rover. They can spend time coloring at the picnic tables and making plans to save the treasure that they made out of papier-mâché before the party. Make a super relay race and obstacle course so they can race for the finish line of a meal fit for a hero with healthy snacks of fruits and veggies.
