Healthy Lungs for Tons of Fun!

Learning about the body can be lots of fun for kids and adults, and understanding how their body works can inspire people to take care of it. One of the coolest parts of the body is the lungs, which fill the body with oxygen, process out carbon dioxide, and fuel all our actions. Even though we can’t look at our lungs, or any other internal organs, that doesn’t mean that kids can’t learn about them and get excited about it. Making their imaginations run wild with interesting facts and then tying it to activities they enjoy will make living a life to support healthy lungs a positive experience for children.

Did you know these fun facts about the lungs?

  1. The left lung is smaller than the right to make room for your heart.
  2. Your lungs are part of the respiratory system, which includes your larynx (voice box), trachea (windpipe), both lungs, and the diaphragm.
  3. When you’re an adult, your lungs would actually take up the size of a tennis court if you could lay them out flat.
  4. Lungs have a layer of mucus in them to prevent bacteria from getting in.
  5. Your lungs exhale water that is invisible to the naked eye.
  6. Lungs help people float when they swim.

So what are some fun exercises to do to keep our lungs strong?

  1. Jump rope: Whether it is one person using the jump rope by themselves or more learning how to double-dutch, jumping rope can increase coordination and endurance, and it is a lot of fun that can help kids make friends.
  2. Swimming: An important skill for kids to have, swimming is one of the healthiest activities. It builds muscle, but it also helps kids learn to control their breathing. It builds their lung capacity, which is great for future exercise and sports if they pursue athletics.
  3. Yoga: Part of how yoga works is that one movement is connected to one inhale or exhale, which helps build control and helps kids learn to focus. While they increase their flexibility, they can also focus their mind and connect their breath to their movement.

The stronger your lungs are, the healthier the body is overall, so make sure you take some time and appreciate every inhale and exhale!
