'Tis the Season for Giving Back

As kids grow up, they begin to learn about the difference between good and bad, and the adults around them help them develop positive values. Learning how to be a helping hand to others is such an important part of growing up into an amazing person. At Stretch-n-Grow, we believe in the power of generosity and helping others. Being healthy doesn’t just mean having strong bodies; it means close friendships, helpful neighbors, and being nice to one another. The holiday season is an ideal time to help kids start learning how to give to others!

Here are 3 ways to help kids learn about how to give back during the holidays:

  1. Let them pick out a toy to go to a toy drive. During this special season, lots of places set out boxes to collect toys to go to kids who may not otherwise get a gift for Christmas. Helping kids learn the value of giving something new, something they’d like too, to someone who needs it is a great way to help them learn how to empathize with others and be a part of the solution.
  2. Volunteer at a soup kitchen for a couple hours. There is some serious need in the world; and while we cannot solve everyone’s problems, we can be a part of changing our community.  This activity is probably better with slightly older kids but taking them for a couple hours to help serve meals to people experiencing need or homelessness can be a positive experience. Many people make it a family tradition!
  3. Fundraise a donation to your family’s favorite charity. Having a piggy bank to save up for treats or trips is common, but one way to keep the family focused on giving all year long is to have one to save up to make one big holiday donation. Pick a charity that your family believes in and supports and save up to make a contribution together.
